Sammy Was Named The All-Format Coach of The West Ind

Daren Sammy, the former West Indies captain, has been officially named as the head coach for all senior West Indies men’s teams. Sammy will take charge of the Test side starting April 1, 2025, as Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced on Monday, December 16. The news came from Miles Bascombe, CWI’s Director of Cricket, during the quarterly press conference held in St. Vincent.

Transition in Coaching Roles

Sammy, who was appointed as the white-ball head coach in May 2023, has significantly impacted the limited-overs formats. Andre Coley, the former wicket keeper-batter, took charge of the Test team around the same time, having previously served as interim red-ball head coach. • On the other hand, Coley started his tenure with the home Test series against India in July 2023.

Successes Under Sammy’s White-Ball Leadership

Under Daren Sammy’s leadership, the West Indies white-ball teams achieved several notable victories:

ODI Series Victories

  1. Against UAE – June 2023

  2. Against Bangladesh

  3. Twice against England

However, despite these successes, the team failed to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup after missing out on the final of the World Cup qualifiers.

T20I Series Triumphs

The West Indies T20I team flourished under Sammy, securing:

  • Qualification to the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies.

Struggles for the West Indies Test Team

While the white-ball teams saw a resurgence under Sammy, the West Indies Test team struggled under Andre Coley’s leadership:

  • The team failed to secure a single series victory during this period.

  • Key series defeats came against India, England, and South Africa.

  • The Test team managed to draw a series against Australia and Bangladesh.

Bright Spot Against Australia

One of the standout performances came in January 2024 at The Gabba, Brisbane:

  • West Indies bowled Australia out for 207, defending a target of 216.

Despite this, the overall record for the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle was disappointing:

  • Two wins from 11 matches.

  • Seven losses, leading the team to finish at the bottom of the table.

Cricket West Indies’ New CEO: Chris Dehring

In addition to the coaching changes, Cricket West Indies announced the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

  • Chris Dehring will take up the role starting February 1, 2025.

  • This position has remained vacant since Johnny Grave stepped down in October 2024.

The Road Ahead

Daren Sammy’s appointment as head coach for all West Indies men’s teams signals a significant shift for the Caribbean side. While Sammy has already demonstrated his ability to inspire success in white-ball cricket, the challenge now lies in reviving the Test team’s fortunes.

Chris Dehring’s leadership as CEO further underscores CWI’s intention to implement structural and managerial changes to elevate West Indies cricket on the global stage.

With both leaders set to assume their expanded roles in 2025, West Indies fans will hope for a resurgence across all formats as the team prepares for upcoming challenges in international cricket.
